Afanasev Sergei Panteleimonovich, born April 30, 1964, lives in Blagoveshchensk. On charges of committing a crime under Part 1 of Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Organizing the activities of an extremist organisation") and Part 1 of Article 282.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Financing extremist activities") in connection with membership in a community of Jehovah's Witnesses banned in Russia, he was sentenced to 6.5 years in a general regime penal colony. The appellate court upheld the sentence.
Since September 18, 2020, he has been under a written personal recognisance (an obligation not to leave the city). On December 21, 2022, he was arrested in the courtroom after the verdict was announced.
